This is a phrase used in the church to describe a phenomena that takes place when the power of God enters powerfully into a service and people fall down. This was a relatively common event in Scripture. Shortly after God revealed Himself to me in a vision and I made Him Lord of my life I was lead by the Spirit to Pleasant Valley Assembly of God in Chico, CA. As I would sit in the service I could feel the power of God building up in the sanctuary. Pretty soon you could see by the Spirit a wave of power go through the sanctuary and a whole section of people would fall as if by a mighty rushing wind. (Acts 2)
One core value of River Rock is "no compromise." If it happened in the Bible we beleive that God wants it for today. The Bible is clear that Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and tomorrow. This type of moving of the Holy Spirit is much more common overseas especially in Africa. Click the following link for a You-Tube video. Reinhardt Bonnke
At River Rock we see this happening from time to time as we allow the Holy Spirit to really manifest in our lives. People falling is generally a sign of the presence of God throughout Scripture. Another core value at River Rock is we seek, desire, and value that presence of God in our services. Falling in the Spirit started in the Old Testament and continues in the New Testament..
Tent of Meeting
"Moses and Aaron then went into the Tent of Meeting. When they came out, they blessed the people; and the glory of the LORD appeared to all the people. Fire came out from the presence of the LORD and consumed the burnt offering and the fat portions on the altar. And when all the people saw it, they shouted for joy and fell facedown." Leviticus 9:23,24
In this story King David is bringing the Ark of the Covenant City of David up to the Holy place. If you come with me to Isreal you will get to go to both of these places.
"the Lord's house was filled with a cloud, so that the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud".
2 Chronicles 5:14
We then can go to the Prophet Ezekiel's vision of the Lord:
"This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD. And when I saw it, I fell upon my face, and I heard a voice of one that spake."
Of Course, the Prophet Daniel had several powerful experiences with God. Here is one:
"But I heard the sound of his words; and as soon as I heard the sound of his words, I fell into a deep sleep on my face, with my face to the ground."
Peter, James, and John had a similar experience when Jesus was transfigured before them.
" While he was still speaking, a bright cloud enveloped them, and a voice from the cloud said, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!"
When the disciples heard this, they fell facedown to the ground, terrified. 7 But Jesus came and touched them. "Get up," he said. "Don't be afraid."
Matthew 17: 5,6
Even some soldiers and officials of the chief priests and Pharisees were not immune to the power of God.
"When Jesus said, "I am he," they drew back and fell to the ground."
The Apostle Paul fell:
"And as he journeyed, he came near Damascus: and suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven: And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?"
John the Revelator fell:
"And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last:"
So, you can see that falling is a Biblical concept. The Holy Spirit is represented as a dove in the Bible. Doves are not generally found landing in the middle of people or where they feel they are not wanted. The Holy Spirit comes when there is a strong desire from the people. We see that in the Upper Room on the day of Pentecost. In fact, in most of the examples above, there was a desire from the person to see God in a new and deeper way. This resulted in the Holy Spirit coming down. If you strongly desire to see God moving powerfully in your life find a church with good teaching on the Holy Spirit and a strong desire to see the Holy Spirit minister.
"Blessed are they who keep his statutes and seek him with all their heart." Psalm 119:2
