Soaking Theology

Early on at River Rock we traveled to Toronto Canada to go to the Airport Christian Fellowship with John Arnott and learn about soaking.  This is the location of the beginning of the "renewal" in 1994.  We were there with Heidi Baker for the "Soaking in The Glory" conference.  We laid on the floor with Heidi and found great joy and peace in the Father's Presence.

The word "soaking," like Sunday School, quiet time, or the Trinity, is a non Biblical term used to describe a Biblical concept. Soaking is a concept that runs throughout scripture from Adam and Eve to John the Revelator. In days past soaking was often called "meditative prayer"  The idea is part of the "renewal" is renewing the kind of relationship that God created in the garden for Adam and Eve to live in where He could visit them and spend time with them. You can read about this in Genesis chapter 3.

The core of soaking is based upon the greatest commandment found in the 22nd chapter of Matthew in verse 37 "Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind." Many of you are parents.  If you are like the parents I know you find that you enjoy your children more when they just curl up on your lap and hug you than when they are asking you for something. Praying to God is an important part of the Christian life but just loving God is the greatest commandment.  I feel like if we just lay in God's lap He knows what we need and will take care of us.

Some of my favorite scriptures on soaking are found in the 23rd Psalm.

"He makes me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside quiet waters. He restores my soul;" Psalm 23:2,3a.

"Surely I have composed and quieted my soul; Like a weaned child rests against his mother, My soul is like a weaned child within me." Psalm 131:2

"Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest." Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and YOU WILL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS. "For My yoke is easy and My burden is light."

Matthew 11:28-30

In John 10:27 Jesus said that "My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me."  If you are a born again believer in Jesus you know His voice and you follow Him. Soaking is a great way to listen to God while he pours out Living Waters on you to refresh and rejuvinate your soul.

"Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him"

Psalm 37:7a
