Pastor Eric's Testimony

I am in the Oakland Coliseum at a Grateful Dead concert.  It's February 17th, 1979.  The band is playing.  I am with 40 of my  friend's.  My closest friend's dad is good friends with the father of the drummer (Billy Kruetzman) so we just kind of grew up going to Dead shows.  All of the sudden I notice that in the darkness above the stage lights there is writing in letters of fire.  The words are "God is Love."  I am so excited that I get the attention of the person next to me and try to get them to see the letters.  However, they could not see the vision. It was for me.  Then the words changed to "The only thing that separates you from God is sin."  Now I had been a hippie for quite some time at this point.  I had dabbled in Eastern Religion, American Indian Religion, and hippie religion.  You know " Be Here Now."  So I thought that I was god.  Had you come and told me what these words said I would have argued violently with you.  However, I felt God's hand holding my heart and I could not argue.  I don't know how I knew it was God's hand I just knew.

Then the words change again "Jesus Christ is God's only answer for sin."  I was so against organized religion.  I thought that guilt was just something the church came up with to extort money out of you and make you do things you didn't want to.  In fact, I took a class on guilt at Humboldt State University.  I got so upset with the professor that I stood up in class, told her off, and walked out never to return.  But, the hand of God was still holding my heart and I could not argue.  Then God spoke to my heart and He said "In every person's life there comes a time to choose whether to go with me or without me.  Eric, tonight is your night to choose."  I can remember realizing that I could not possibly understand the full impact of this decision on my life.  But I also remember knowing that this was the right things to do. This was the thing that I was created to do.

So, right in the middle of that Grateful Dead Concert I lifted up my hands and prayed "Jesus, forgive me of my sins and be my Lord and my Saviour.  I will do my best to follow you all the days of my life."  And you know what, 29 years later, I have never been that same.  When I prayed that prayer Jesus took my sin and washed it away.  He took that old spirit of mine and nailed it to the cross and put a new spirit within me (Romans 6).  Since then the joy of the Lord has been my strength.  And you know what?  He can do the same for you.  All you have to do is ask God to forgive you and to be your Lord and Savior.  Why put it off?  Why not pray now?

Chapter 2

The next chapter of my life got even better.  I found out that God answers prayers!  This was fun.  I had read pastor Cho's book on prayer and started being really specific in my prayers.  One day I prayed for a Sony 19" color tv [pretty big deal in 1980] and a friend of mine who was moving gave me his the next day.  Another time I prayed for a wife who was tall, with long hair, and was a musician.  That prayer took more than a few days but it came to pass!

The Lord lead me to Bethany Bible College in Scott's Valley where I met my wife of 25 years and graduated with a degree in Pastoral Studies.  I then attended the Assemblies of God Theological Seminary and then graduated from Missouri State with a Masters degree in Guidance and Counseling.  Since then my wife and I have been senior pastors of three churches.

The last 8 years of my 32 year walk with God have no doubt been the best.  Traveling overseas, seeing God do so many miracles, changing my life and those around me.  Learning to live in the presence of God.  Don't put off your journey with God.  Start today!  And, don't try to walk it alone.  This is a pilgrimage made to be shared with others, your brothers and sisters in Christ.  Why not come check out River Rock.

"Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand. And we rejoice in the hope of the glory of God.
